Some ideas of photographic essay.

The theme of this essay is the ideology of the show window, and people persue better life. All the photos will be divided into 2 groups. The first group is about old or middle age people persue a younger and comfortable life. The second group is about how show window designed in order to attract their target markets. Some details about the photos will analysis briefly.

This essay will also write about the composition and the problems of the project.

In this shot, a Chinese couple is looking at the show window . However, this middle-age man is interested in the training wear. Maybe this man has economic foundation, he has a Burberry scarf. Therefore, he will interested in the clothing which in the show window, because the brand of this training wear Y-3, the price of this brand is not cheap.  What people interested in can be related in their class.

In this shot, the background is John Lewis's show window. A women is looking at the show window. The theme of this show window is about natural homeland. Maybe this theme has attracted this woman, she is looking at this carefully. The subject of woman is drawn by the use of the rule of thirds and the subject is on the mid left within this frame. However, maybe the fantasy home in the show window is which this housewife wanted.

I have captured many photos of this scene. I chosen two from all of these photos and I prefer the second one. Because the message can be target. Three teenagers are looking at the sports shoes shop's show window which they are interested in. The angle of camera is eye angle, it can look more broadly, the whole show window can be shown. And one of the most compelling thing about eye angle is this sense of identification between  the subjects in the photo and the audience. Teenagers are attracted by these sports shoes.   It can be verified the viewpoint of my project. People will see what they are interested. However, their interest is related to their class and age.

This long shot shows two girls and their father are looking at the Swarovski's show window. Two girls are interested in the latest jewelry. The main subject are in the middle of the photograph, it can make audience focusing on the most important priorities. Young girls do not have enough money to buy expensive jewelry,  therefore, Swarovski is a good choice for them. In usual, men are not interested in this, but this father also looking at this show window carefully, just because his daughter like this. The theme of the show window also is a key point. The latest theme of Swarovski is Frozen. It follows young costumer's interest, in order to let young girls to but their product. It fixed the ideology of young girls.

The angle of the camera is eye level. A eye level can make the subject more reality and has the narrative characteristic. The main focus point of the photograph is a couple are looking at the show window. The main subject was horizontal framed on the left side,  I have drawn to the object of a couple by the use of rule of thirds, the object is appears on the mid left. The long shot can make the real distance between audience and the shot of the camera. The background of the photography is the show window of a fair-price brand. A middle age woman is looking at the clothing in the show window, may the man next to her is giving her some advice. Another woman in this image also looking at the show window. Women will pay more attention to what they prefer. Although the style of these clothing are youthful and maybe the target market is young girl but no matter women are, they all yearn for a younger life.

The angle of this image is eye angle. It can make audience feel they are personally on the scene. Put the subject in the middle of the image can make audience focus on the two people who are looking at the show window. Also, these couple is the main point of the photograph. The framing tell us that two middle aged and elderly people are looking at the show window of MUJI. A medium shot shows some part of the subject in more detail while still giving an impression of the whole subject. And the background add to more message, this couple are looking at the shoes in the show window, an the shoes are lovers shoes. The lighting is natural lighting with the shadow on the show window. In this photo, there are two important subject. A couple and show window. They are looking at MUJI's show window, maybe it can be related their class and age. Because they are not young, so they are pursue a comfortable life. And maybe they are not very rich, so they choose a fair-price brand.

The camera angle of this image is eye angle, and it is a hand-held shots. A eye angle can make the subject is a fairly neutral shot as far as impact and emotion. In this photo, the composition is rule f thirds,  a old man is looking at the show window carefully. Because it is a sunny day, so he is hold a hand on his face as a blind for better show window- watching. The main focal point of this photograph is the old man who is looking at the show window, the length of this shot is long shot. It is generally one which shows the image as approximately "life" size, corresponding to the real distance between the audience and the subject.  In this shot, I also show a clearly scene of the show window, because the old man and the fantasy in the show window can be a interesting contrast. From the costume of the old man, he is seemingly old-fashioned. But he is interested in the colorful and youthful clothing which in the show window. Moreover, the background ( show window) add to the photo's overall message, it can make audience more clearly about the message of the photo. The lighting is this photo is soft and naturally. Because I think natural lighting can make the photo more lively, naturally and more realistic. However, the shadow on the show window is also what I want. Because the contrast between the real world and the fantasy world can show that people all want a good life. The world in the show window represent what they want, but the reality can not always good as the fantasy world.

Research of the project (Oxford Street).

I want to do the project in the Oxford Street. The Oxford Street is a major road in London with around half a million daily visitors, and it has many different shops. It is mix of high street fashion and international brands. If I want to take the photo of show windows, Oxford Street is the best choice. Firstly,  Some medium and high grade shopping mall like Selfridges, John Lewis are set on the Oxford Street. In addition, there are also some low and medium grade shops on streets. So it is conform to my project that take shot of different class consumers. Secondly, some building in the Oxford Street also historical. To some extent, it can be a representative of the development of  London culture. The objects are not only consumers, but also the building.

Test shot ideas

I will take some test shot in London. In order to show the different class consumers. I will take the test shot in different kinds of show windows. The spot of photography will mainly at Oxford Street. Because it is prosperous.

- sports shop( for young consumers)
- jewelry shop ( for women consumers)
- home use products shop(middle age consumers)
- costume shop(expensive, for high class, rich consumers )
- costume shop ( cheap, for low class, poor consumers)

The time of test shot will mainly focus on the forenoon, because the light is better at this time and will have more people.

Photography Techniques

RULE OF THIRDs



 I have focused on the show window of different shop and analysis it through ideology for my project, therefore I've not only need photographed the show window but also need to take a candid photography of people who is looking at the show window. When composing my photos, I could not always consider where to position my camera carefully, because some people just seeing the show window for a short time. I try to used the rule of thirds for my images. The object usually at the right hand side, this kind of composing can make audience clearly see what people are looking at.  The light on the glass window looks like a diagonal line. To some extent, it seems like a leading line and affect the way audience view the image. The diagonal can be used to enhance the composition of this photo. 



In this image, I have made it in the frame and  shown the whole scene of the show window. I am not only focus on the show window, but also captured images of two Chinese are looking at the show window. I think this image has a obvious focus point. The objects are in the right hand side. 


 SYMMETRY AND PATTERNS 

In this image, I composing the objects in the middle. The use of symmetry and patterns can make for very eye-catching compositions, introducing tension and a focal point to the scene. Audience can clearly see three young people are looking at the sneakers and understand what I want to focus on. 









Week 6: create an imaginary landscape.
